PREP ROUNDUP: Alpena girls soccer team tops Sault Ste. Marie

GIRLS SOCCER

Alpena 5, Sault Ste. Marie 0

ALPENA– Alpena got back in the win column on Wednesday, topping Sault Ste. Marie 5-0.

Kami Schultz had a goal and two assists for the Wildcats (2-14-1) and Alpena got single tallies from five different players.

Olivia Rochefort, Nicole Johnson, Reese Wisniewski and Jenna Leeck all scored for Alpena and Alayna Trelfa played a complete game in net for the shutout.

BASEBALL

Alcona moves above .500

LINCOLN–The Alcona baseball team got back above .500 with a pair of wins over Posen on Wednesday, 14-4 and 13-7.

In the first game, Gavin Walker earned the win for Alcona (7-6) and was 3-for-4 at the plate with two triples and a double; Collin Walker was 4-for-4 with three RBI for the Tigers; Nathan Nardi was 3-for-3 with five RBI and Michael Basner was 2-for-3.

Alcona led 5-3 after one inning and added three more runs in the second inning for an 8-4 lead.

Ethan Romel had two hits for Posen and Chase Dubie had a hit and three RBI.

In the second game, Jacob Sytek earned the win and Gavin Walker earned the save.

Zach Stephenson was 3-for-3 with two RBI with a double; Gavin Walker was 2-for-2; Basner was 3-for-4 with a triple and five RBI.

Alcona scored four runs in each of the first two innings and led 10-2 after three innings.

Dubie had two hits to lead Posen.

SOFTBALL

Hurons take 2 from Oscoda

OSCODA–In a battle of two of the top teams in the North Star League’s Big Dipper on Monday, Rogers City prevailed over Oscoda 16-2 and 21-19.

In the opener, Rogers City built a quick 5-0 lead and added 10 runs in the fifth inning. Chloe Hentkowski had a home run, Taylor Krentz had five hits and Mackenzie Bruning allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

Oscoda scored nine runs to start game 2, but Rogers City sent 20 batters to the plate and scored 14 runs to lead 14-9 after one inning. Rogers City added four runs in the second inning to lead 18-9.

Oscoda scored three runs in the third inning and seven in the fourth to tie the game at 19. In the fifth inning, Grace Garrison and Karissa Rabeau both had a two-out RBI to give the Hurons a 21-19 lead.

Posen loses pair of one-run games

GRAYLING–The Posen softball team came up short of victory in a pair of one-run games against Grayling, 10-9 and 18-17 on Tuesday.

In the opener, Posen fell behind 8-1 after two innings and rallied back with four runs in both the third and sixth innings. Posen tied the game at nine in the top of the sixth inning, but Grayling scored a run in the bottom of the inning to win.

Ava Wesner had three hits for Posen and Madison Kamyszek, Abi Schellie and Faith Cousins each had two hits. Lizzy Romel and Makayla Kamyszek each had two RBI.

Both teams were tied 15-15 after six innings in the nightcap, but Grayling scored three runs in the seventh inning to Posen’s two.

Makayla Kamyszek (2 runs) and Wesner each had a home run. Romel had four hits and three RBI; Wesner had three hits and five RBI; Makayla Kamyszek had four hits and four RBI; Schellie and Madison Kamyszek had two hits and Kamyszek had two RBI, as did Cousins.

Alpena boys win 9/10 Falcon Invite

WEST BRANCH–The Alpena boys track team took top honors at the 9/10 Falcon Invite on Monday.

Alpena finished with 203 points, ahead of Cadillac (185), Gaylord (72) and Bay City John Glenn (67).

JV BASEBALL

Alpena sweeps TC Central

TRAVERSE CITY–The Alpena JV baseball team cruised past Traverse City Central on Tuesday, topping the Trojans 12-0 and 9-1.

In the opener, Alpena scored six runs in the top of the first inning and kept in control from there. Kaleb Donajkowski had four hits for Alpena and Marc Kirchner had two hits, including a home run and three RBI. Jon Rensberry had two hits and two RBI and Tucker Bright had two hits and an RBI.

Kirchner and Rensberry combined to fan 10 batters and allow just one hit.

The Wildcats scored in every inning in the second game and limited Central to two hits.

Kirchner and Donajkowski each had two hits. Caleb McEwen and Brady Pagels combined to strike out 10 and allowed a run on two hits.

JUNIOR HIGH TRACK

Hillman wins NSL Championship

FAIRVIEW–Hillman’s girls junior high track team won the North Star League Championship on Tuesday in Fairview.

Winners for Hillman included: Nora Steinke in the 70 dash (10.1) and 200 dash (31.1); Aubrey Weiland in the 100 dash (14.3) and 400 run (1:18.5); Maci Klein in the 55 hurdles (10.9) and long jump (11-11 1/4); Gretchen Weiland in the high jump (3-8) and the 400 relay team of Klein, Steinke, Gretchen Weiland and Aubrey Weiland (59.4 seconds).
