Local school board ROUNDUP: APS recommends asbestos contract

∫ The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education’s Property Committee recommends the board award an asbestos abatement contract to Total Environmental for the district’s asbestos abatement projects in the amount of $198,200.

The district will be doing asbestos abatement at Hinks, Besser, Ella White, Sanborn, and Wilson elementaries, the former Sunset Elementary School, and Central Office as part of the $33.9 million property tax voters approved in March. The majority of the asbestos abatement will be completed in the boiler rooms of the schools.

Total Environment is the lowest bidder for the project and is recommended over three other contractors who submitted bids for the project.

There are also three alternate asbestos abatement projects that could cost up to $18,630 to complete.

The school board will meet at 5:30 p.m. today via the online conferencing software Zoom. ∫ The Rogers City Area Schools Board of Education voted to pay $10,000 in severance pay to teachers who have worked with the district for a minimum of 20 years if they choose to retire. There are seven teachers in the district who are eligible for the severance pay.

The board also approved a resolution asking the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer requesting school districts have the option to meet virtually, in person, or a combination of the two starting immediately.

The resolution stated the board would implement the same health and safety measures that exist for student classes and activities. School Board members are the only individuals within their districts who are not allowed to meet in person.

∫ The Posen Consolidated Schools Board of Education selected officers during their organizational meeting in January, including Andrew Stone as president, Brian Konieczny as vice president, Danielle Kowalski as secretary, and Anna Soik as treasurer.

The board also appointed the Posen and Rogers City branches of Calcite Credit Union, Citizens Bank, and Michigan Liquid Asset Fund to be the official depositories for school funds.

The board also selected East Lansing-based Thrun Law Firm to serve as legal counsel.
