3 more deaths as Northeast Michigan count reaches 100

ALPENA — Since Northeast Michigan reported its first COVID-19 infection last April, 100 Northeast Michigan residents have died after being infected with COVID-19.

Local public health officials announced on Tuesday that three more Northeast Michigan residents died after being infected with the disease, including one Alpena County resident, one Presque Isle County resident, and one Alcona County resident.

Public health officials on Tuesday also reported eight newly infected Northeast Michiganders, including two Alpena County residents, two Presque Isle County residents, and four Alcona County residents. No new infections were reported in Montmorency County.

State data showed that, as of Monday, 12,116 doses of coronavirus vaccine had been administered in Northeast Michigan.

As of Monday, four people were hospitalized at MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena with coronavirus infection, including one in intensive care, according to state data. The hospital was 37% full.

As of Tuesday, 34 people were hospitalized with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 infection across the state-designated, 18-county health care region that includes Alpena, Presque Isle, and Montmorency counties, according to state data.

As of Jan. 19, infection data for Alpena, Montmorency, and Presque Isle counties includes both confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 infection. Alcona County data includes only confirmed cases.

Based on that data, 2,775 Northeast Michiganders have been confirmed or suspected infected since the pandemic hit Michigan in mid-March. Of those, 100 have died.

The last death was reported Tuesday.

Local public health officials have stopped tracking recoveries.
