Infections, deaths still climb, but other stats brighter

ALPENA — Three more Northeast Michiganders have died after being infected with the coronavirus and 19 more are infected, but regional hospitalization rates are improving and hundreds of vaccines are being administered per day, data released today shows.

The sixth death reported this week brings to 90 the total number of Northeast Michiganders who have died since the pandemic hit Michigan in mid-March.

Newly infected Northeast Michiganders reported today included 13 Alpena County residents, three Presque Isle County residents, two Montmorency County residents, and one Alcona County resident.

State data showed that, as of Wednesday, 4,710 doses of coronavirus vaccine had been administered in Northeast Michigan.

As of today, nine people were hospitalized at MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena with coronavirus infection, none in intensive care, according to state data. That’s down from a peak 22 COVID-19 patients on Dec. 3, according to state data.

The Alpena hospital was 39% full as of today.

As of today, 54 people — six fewer than on Wednesday and down from 137 on Dec. 2 — were hospitalized with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 infection across the state-designated, 18-county health care region that includes Alpena, Presque Isle, and Montmorency counties, according to state data.

Since the pandemic hit Michigan in mid-March, 2,652 Northeast Michiganders have been infected, according to local public health agencies.

Local public health officials have stopped tracking recoveries.

Rogers City Area Schools notified parents Thursday evening of an infection in the district. Affected students had been contacted, the district told parents.

Those who were not contacted as of Thursday evening were to attend school today.
