ALPENA — Two more Northeast Michiganders have died after being infected with COVID-19, local public health officials said on today.

Officials also reported four newly infected Northeast Michiganders, including two Presque Isle County residents and two Alcona County residents. That is the fewest reported new infections since Dec. 16.

District Health Department No. 4 also lowered by one the cumulative number of infected Alpena County residents. It wasn’t immediately clear why the data was changed, but officials have said previous changes were made because of corrected data entry errors at the state level.

State data showed that, as of Monday, 7,068 doses of coronavirus vaccine had been administered in Northeast Michigan.

As of Monday, five people were hospitalized at MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena with coronavirus infection, including one in intensive care, according to state data. The hospital was 39% full.

As of today, 46 people were hospitalized with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 infection across the state-designated, 18-county health care region that includes Alpena, Presque Isle, and Montmorency counties, according to state data.

Since the pandemic hit Michigan in mid-March, 2,697 Northeast Michiganders have been infected, according to local public health agencies. Of those, 94 have died.

Local public health officials have stopped tracking recoveries.
