Montmorency County prosecutor leaves GOP

Vicki Kundinger

ATLANTA — After 21 years as a Republican Montmorency County prosecutor, Vicki Kundinger will not be on the ballot in the August election, for the first time running as an independent in November.

Kundinger served in the office from 1984 to 1999, winning the seat again in 2014 and serving until the present. In each previous election, she ran as a Republican.

“I no longer feel like I can support the national Republican Party,” Kundinger told The News in explanation of her change in party.

She declined to provide further explanation.

A Montmorency County representative of the Michigan Republicans could not be reached for comment.

With no Democratic or Republican opponents appearing on the August primary ballot, Kundinger will win reelection as long as she gets one vote in November, unless another independent files to run against her.

The filing deadline for independents to be on the November ballot is July 16.
