AMA ESD honors Mahler and welcomes Jakubcin

Mike Mahler

The Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District (AMA ESD) proudly recognizes and thanks Mike Mahler for his more than a decade of dedicated service on the AMA ESD Board of Education, including his most recent role as Board President. Throughout his tenure, Mahler provided steady leadership focused on strengthening educational

opportunities for students and supporting districts across Northeast Michigan. His governance reflected a strong belief in collaboration, fiscal responsibility, and the essential connection between high-quality public education and healthy, thriving communities.

“Mike’s leadership has made a lasting difference for the AMA ESD and the districts we serve,” said Justin Gluesing, superintendent of AMA ESD. “He brought a unique combination of strategic insight, community perspective, and genuine commitment to public service. His work

consistently centered on what was best for students, families, and the long-term success of our region. I am deeply grateful for his partnership and leadership.”

Mahler’s service to AMA ESD complements a distinguished career of community and economic leadership. Most recently, he announced his retirement as Director of Economic Development for Target Alpena, where he played a central role in advancing regional economic growth, building strong partnerships, attracting investment, and supporting local businesses.

At its Jan. 28 meeting, the AMA ESD Board of Education appointed Steve Jakubcin to fill the vacancy created by Mahler’s departure. Jakubcin will serve the remainder of Mahler’s term, which is scheduled to expire in June 2027.

Gluesing also praised the appointment of Jakubcin, highlighting his long-standing commitment to the region.

“Steve has demonstrated an extraordinary dedication to Northeast Michigan through countless hours of service to our communities,” Gluesing said. “His willingness to step forward and serve the AMA ESD is a testament to his belief in education and regional collaboration. We are fortunate to have someone with his perspective, integrity, and commitment joining the board.”
