Fake $100 bills found in Alpena

Courtesy photo This is a photo of a prop $100 bill that is often used in motion pictures or television shows. Several of the fake bills have been used and recovered in the Alpena area.

The Alpena Police Department is warning the public about fraudulent money meant for movie and television shows.

Officers have been investigating local cases for the prop money that is marked with a “For Motion Picture Copy Money” warning.

In a press release on Tuesday, police say at first glance, the fake money looks authentic and could blend in well with true currency.

So far, officers have received fake $100 bills used in the last week and people are urged to examine bills that are being passed or exchanged. Possessing prop money is not illegal, passing it as real currency is a crime. If you encounter any of the prop money, please contact the Alpena Police Department at 989-354-1800.
