Center of Charity to close emergency shelter for men
The All Saints Catholic Parish-Center of Charity announced on Monday that it is forced to close its homeless shelter in Alpena nfor adult men, at least for the time being.
In a statement to The News from the Center of Charity, the organization said the closure will begin at the end of the month and talked about the positive impact it had on the Alpena area.
“Effective October 31, 2025, the All Saints Center of Charity will temporarily suspend its Emergency Resource Room for adult men. In just 378 days, we’ve responded to 4,002 interactions, serving those referred by police, hospitals, jails, and other community partners,” the statement said. “Despite our deep commitment, our pause is not a retreat, it is a call to action.”
The statement says All Saints Catholic Parish has given significant financial investment, but despite our efforts to garner sustained support for overnight care, helping to get buy-in from others has been a difficult.
“We urge civic leaders, business leaders, faith communities, and compassionate neighbors to co-create a trauma-informed, community-owned response to homelessness,” the statement says. “If 30 individuals or groups were able to commit to sponsoring one day a month at $550 per day on a monthly basis, we could continue operating this vital shelter.”
Our other services, like Friendship Room Meals, which has served more than 33,000 meals, and the Daytime Community Connections Room, which has had 5,100 interactions, outreach, and collaborative care will continue without interruption.
