Tips to keep you and your loved ones safe in summer traffic

ALPENA — The American Automobile Association (AAA) urges drivers to stay vigilant this summer while people, and especially children, are spending more time outdoors, according to a June 16 press release.

Statistics show that the risk of traffic incidents involving children increases during the summer months. Pedestrian injuries peak for kids ages 5 to 14, who are more frequently found in the vicinity of roads and streets, the press release stated.

The AAA advises drivers to stay alert. Watch for children on bicycles, scooters, and playing in front of their homes.

Additionally, drive at or below posted speed limits, especially in residential areas where children might be present.

Be sure to put down your phone and minimize other distractions while driving to stay fully focused on the road.

Always yield the right-of-way to pedestrians at crosswalks and be prepared to stop when necessary.

Be a role model for safe behavior. Parents are encouraged to teach their children about roadway safety, including how to cross streets safely.

Alpena Police Department Chief Eric Hamp urged drivers to be more cautious around this time of year, since Alpena is a tourist destination.

There are many people in town on vacation who are unfamiliar with the area, he said. It’s important to be patient and slow down.

“Anticipate heavy traffic … traveling is going to be slower than what we’re used to,” Hamp said.

More people are out on bicycles and walking around in the summer. Approach pedestrians with extra caution, he said.

Be aware of the road conditions at all times, and avoid distractions while driving. People need to make sure they are keeping their eyes on the road and putting their cell phones down, Hamp said.

“If we all work together we can all make sure that everyone can get to their destination safely,” Hamp stated.
