Millersburg man arrested, arraigned on multiple drug charges

On June 24, Huron Undercover Narcotics Team (HUNT), with the assistance of the Michigan State Police (MSP) Alpena Post, conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on 451 Road in Hawks Township, Presque Isle County.

The subsequent investigation led to the discovery of approximately 170 grams of suspected powder cocaine, 114 grams of crystal methamphetamine, 25 grams of crack cocaine, multiple gift cards from Dollar General ranging from $50 to $100, and $536 cash, according to a Tuesday press release.

The investigation continued, and a consent search of the suspect’s residence was granted. Detectives seized an additional 42 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 60 grams of powder cocaine, 46 oxycodone pills, seven hydrocodone pills, an additional $300 in cash, hundreds of individual baggies commonly used for packaging narcotics, and a loaded unregistered handgun. The total amount of narcotics seized from the vehicle and the residence were approximately: 231 grams of powder cocaine, 156.1 grams of methamphetamine, 50.2 grams of crack, seven hydrocodone pills, 46 oxycodone pills, $836 in cash, and an unregistered handgun. The total weight of all narcotics seized comes to 437.3 grams, which is 0.96 pounds of cocaine, crack and methamphetamine, the press release stated.

The suspect was identified as 63-year-old Jeffery Kortman from Millersburg. He was arraigned on Monday in the 89th District Court of Presque Isle County.

He was charged with one count of controlled substance — manufacture of methamphetamine on school or library property, three counts of controlled substance — possession with intent to deliver on school or library property (narcotic or cocaine) less than 50 grams, two counts of controlled substance — delivery/manufacture methamphetamine, one count of controlled substance — possession on school or library property — methamphetamine, one count of controlled substance — possession (cocaine, heroin, or other narcotic) 50 to 449 grams, two counts of controlled substance — delivery/manufacture (cocaine, heroin or another narcotic) 50 to 449 grams, four counts of controlled substance — delivery/manufacture (cocaine, heroin or another narcotic) less than 50 grams, one count of weapons — firearms — possession by prohibited person, one count of weapons — firearms — ammunition — possession by prohibited person, one count of weapons — felony firearm, and two counts of controlled substance — maintaining a drug house.

Kortman was also charged with controlled substance — second or subsequent offense notice and habitual offender — fourth offense notice.

Kortman was given a $500,000 cash surety bond and his next scheduled court appearance is 10:30 a.m. on July 15.
