Limited funds available for housing upgrades in Alcona and Presque Isle counties

ALPENA — Target Alpena Development Corp. has announced that limited funding is still available through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority’s Investing in Community Housing Program for residents of Alcona and Presque Isle counties.

The funds are designated to assist with essential housing repairs and accessibility upgrades to improve health and safety in both single-family and multifamily homes.

The MICH Program is designed to support communities disproportionately affected by the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. By enhancing housing security and increasing the value of existing homes, the initiative offers both immediate household benefits and long-term community improvements.

Eligible projects include accessibility retrofit elements such as wheelchair ramps, zero-step entries, lever door handles, and bathroom and kitchen remodels following visitability standards, and accessibility improvements such as handrails, grab bars, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant fixtures, barrier-free showers, toggle light switches, ramps, zero-step entries, widened doorways, universal design floor coverings, first-floor bedroom, kitchen, and utility modifications, and van-accessible parking.

If you are a resident of Alcona or Presque Isle counties and think you might be eligible, applications must be submitted by Sept. 15 and funds are distributed based on need.
