ALPENA – MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena recently held its annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner at JJ’s Steak and Pizza House, recognizing another year of outstanding service from its dedicated volunteer team. The event brings volunteers together to celebrate their continued commitment to supporting the Medical Center and enhancing the experience of patients and visitors.
Liz Larsen, volunteer coordinator, MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena, spoke about the significance of the evening, noting, “This banquet gives us an opportunity to recognize the dedication our volunteers show every day and we are proud to be able to present awards for the many years and hours of service they provide. Their time, compassion and willingness to help others makes a difference throughout the Medical Center, and we are grateful for all they do.”
Over the past year, 81 volunteers at the Medical Center contributed more than 15,600 hours of service. They support a wide range of areas, serving as lobby greeters, assisting in surgical waiting areas and helping guide patients and visitors throughout the facility. In addition to donating their time, volunteers raised funds through efforts such as the annual Koeze Nut Sale and sales from The Gift Corner, the Medical Center’s gift shop, with proceeds benefiting the organization.
During the event, Ann Diamond, development director, MyMichigan Health Foundation, accepted a $90,000 donation from the funds raised by the volunteers. The funds will go toward the purchase of two different ultrasound units, including one for breast health and one for cardiovascular services. Both units will positively impact patients from throughout the region seeking care from these specialties.
The current Alpena volunteer program has roots dating back to the 1970s, when state requirements prompted the Medical Center to complete major upgrades and expansions to modernize the facility. Since then, volunteers have remained closely connected to the organization’s growth and progress.
Diamond reflected on the volunteers’ impact, saying, “Our volunteers continue to play an important role in supporting advancements in patient care. Their generosity helps fund essential equipment and improvements that benefit our patients, families and staff, and we sincerely appreciate their ongoing dedication and commitment.”
Throughout the years, volunteers at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena have contributed to a wide range of projects, from supporting the Alpena Cancer Center and Community Resource Center to helping fund advanced medical equipment such as MRI technology, nuclear medicine imaging, surgical tools and patient care equipment. Their support has also extended to enhancements like family waiting areas, volunteer services resources and large-scale renovations, including the Emergency Department and patient tower waiting areas.
Today, volunteers continue that tradition through ongoing multi-year commitments supporting key initiatives, including their most recent pledge payment for cardiovascular imaging and breast health technology. In total, the group has contributed more than $2.79 million, leaving a lasting impact on the Medical Center and the patients and families it serves.
Volunteers continue to play a vital role at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena, helping to enhance the quality of care and support provided throughout the facility.
