Hillman fall arts and craft show planned this weekend

A fall arts and craft show is planned for this weekend in Hillman. The craft show will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Emerick Park, located at 351 State St. A chili cookoff will be held at 5 p.m. in the park’s pavilion.

Artists from Michigan, and surrounding states, will be selling their hand crafted items. The show will feature botanical jewelry creations from Gypsy Rose Studios, home and yard decor by Lisa Corey, wooden childrens toys from Possum Products, baked goods from Great Bread, spice rubs from Black Pearl, and more.

Michael Carrier, author of the mystery Sugar Island, will be available for a book signing. His 14 books, all set in Michigan, will be available for purchase.

Vendors will be spaced out throughout the park, adhering to social distancing requirements while allowing patrons supporting the arts. Hand sanitizing stations will also be available.

The event is presented by Blue Ribbon Events, LLC.

Alcona Pop-Up Pantry and Census Event Today

The Alcona County Commission on Aging will be holding a Pop-Up Pantry and Census Event for Alcona County residents from 4 to 6 p.m. — or until the food is gone — at Alcona Elementary School, located at 181 N. Barlow Road in Lincoln.

Attendees will also be able to complete the 2020 Census for a chance to win a free kids bike. Other giveaways will be provided by the ACCOA’s community partners.

Alpena County Library to host workshop on historic property repair

The Alpena County Library will be offering a free workshop on how to repair masonry on historic properties from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 29 via the online platforms Zoom or Facebook Live.

Blair Bates of the Michigan Historic Preservation Network will be leading the workshop, where participants will investigate stone and brick as building materials and examine some common issues associated with their deterioration and repair.

Participants will learn how to assess mortar conditions, how and when to re-point, how and when to replace stones or bricks, and the importance of selecting and using the right replacement mortar.

The first hour will feature an informational presentation and the second hour will feature the virtual demonstration of skills.
