Events at the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary

ALPENA – The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (TBNMS) announced upcoming events planned for the community to attend in a press release on Tuesday.

Science on a Sphere with Zoey — Monday at 1 p.m.

TBNMS encourages people to take advantage of this chance to experience an interactive presentation of Science on a Sphere at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center.

There are less than 200 of these spheres in the United States and TBNMS is home to one of them, according to the release. This carbon fiber sphere has four HD projectors that display data collected by NOAA and other scientists.

At 1 p.m. on Monday, Michigan Sea Grant Intern Zoey Crossley will give an interactive presentation using the sphere, touching on climate science, ocean acidification science, and the freshwater acidification study happening at TBNMS.

Lecture: The Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum – Wednesday, June 24 at 6 p.m.

Visit TBNMS for “The Sanctuary Presents” lecture featuring Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum Director Mike Horn as he recaps the beginnings, new location, and continued growth of this Rogers City museum, according to the release. As a retired captain on the Great Lakes and ocean, he will speak to the unique hazards which often manifest on the lakes during the late season storms.

The Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum started in Sebawaing in 1990 as a summer project, according to the release. Ed Brklacich, a retired teacher, was participating in the activities of his local arts council, and the challenge for that year was to present a story. Brklacich decided to interview some retired sailors in the area about what it was like to sail on the “Lakers,” he’d seen going by on Saginaw Bay. Word of the interviews got out and led to more interviews. Then the artifacts started showing up. Brklacich, and his wife Betty Brklacich, purchased a one-room schoolhouse to display the collection. When this was outgrown, the Board of Directors began looking for another location.

TBNMS explained in the release that the museum features exhibits on historic Great Lakes storms and a well-rounded look at life working on the water. It also has a Memorial Hall for the many local families impacted by shipwreck tragedies connected to Rogers City.

“The Sanctuary Presents” is a monthly community outreach event hosted by TBNMS, according to the release. These events are free, educational, and a way to get into your sanctuary.
