~ ALL will learn about What’s New at WBKB 11 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at M. Briggs Center. Come meet the new reporter at WBKB11, Matt Velez. He arrived in Alpena this past summer and began working at the TV station. Matt will talk about his background, his journey getting here, and his work at WBKB.

~ Coping Through Loss With Christ, a grief/loss group, will meet from 2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Holy Cross Cemetery office. ~ A women’s cancer support group meets from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in the lobby of the Alpena Cancer Center. This safe, confidential, peer-to-peer support group welcomes women with a past or present cancer diagnosis.

~ Cub Scouts meet from 6 to 7 p.m., and BSA Scouts meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. each Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 727 S. 2nd Ave., Alpena.

Wednesday, Oct. 8

~ The Michigan Army and Air National Guard will host a public open house from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center, 5884 A St., Alpena. The event will include hands-on experience with military aircrafts, vehicles, rescue equipment, medical equipment, and more. ~ A free lecture, Lake Huron Undercover: 2025 Lakebed Mapping of the Sanctuary, will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center, 500 W. Fletcher St., Alpena. Go beneath the surface of Lake Huron with NOAA Physical Scientist and Hydrographer Melissa Weber as she shares the story of the 2025 lakebed mapping campaign in Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, conducted as part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). This engaging presentation will cover the purpose and goals of the 2025 field season, the advanced technology and vessels used to collect bathymetric and habitat data, and what scientists found beneath the waves — from geologic features to habitat zones and more. You’ll also hear about the technical and logistical challenges the team faced during the project and what’s next for the data, including how it will be made publicly available to support scientific research, education, and conservation.

~ Smokey’s Mountain Bar and Grill will host a pumpkin-carving contest starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, for all ages. The event will feature door prizes, half-priced pizzas, and pumpkins will be provided. The winner gets one free pizza per month for one year! Smokey’s Mountain Bar and Grill is located at 5992 N. ~ Friends Together offers a cancer support group at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at Alcona Elementary School, 181 N. Barlow Road, Lincoln. This group is for anyone facing cancer, no matter where you are on your journey. You are welcome to bring a support person with you.

~ Rich Rider hosts Open Mic Night from 7 to 10 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Black Sheep Pub, 113 S. 2nd Ave., Alpena.

Thursday, Oct. 9

~ Community Walking Club meets at 9 a.m. every Thursday in the parking lot of Alcona County Library in Harrisville.

~ Weekly Storytime will be held from 9:15 to 10:10 a.m. on Thursday at Alpena County Library, 211 N. 1st Ave. This free program is for ages newborn to 5. Two sessions are offered: 9:15 and 9:45 a.m. Participants read a story, sing a song and move, and finish with a craft.

~ Join the Alpena County Girlfriends at 10 a.m. on Thursdays for coffee and conversation. This is a women-only group whose purpose is to make friends and socialize with women from Alpena County and the surrounding areas. Call Betty at 734-693-2869 for weekly location.

~ ALL will Hike Ocqueoc Falls Bicentennial Pathway from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, off Ocqueoc Falls Highway, 11.5 miles west of U.S.-23 North, along M-68. Enjoy a leisurely hike along the Ocqueoc River. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at Ocqueoc Falls.Catch a bit of the fall colors. The trail lengths vary from 2.5 miles to 4 miles over gently rolling terrain.

~ Join ALL for Spitzer from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday at M. Briggs Center, led by Marilyn Klingshirn.

~ MARSP (Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel) will hold their October meeting at noon on Thursday at the First United Methodist Church on the corner of Ripley Boulevard and 1st Avenue. All school personnel are welcome to attend MARSP meetings. A catered luncheon will be available at a cost of $12.50 or you may bring your own lunch. Thursday’s guest speaker will be Mary Centala who will be sharing her talents with the fibers she uses. Friday, Oct. 10

~ ALL pickleball plays from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

~ Exercise is at 10 a.m. at Alpena Senior Citizens Center. Then at noon, Mahjong is played, and pinochle starts at 12:30 p.m.

~ On Fridays, Storytime and Craft for Kids meets at 10:30 a.m. at the Harrisville branch of the Alcona County Library.

~ ALL contract bridge is from 12:30 to 3 p.m. on Fridays at M. Briggs Center.

~ The Hillman VFW Post 2356 hosts its Friday Night Fish Fry from 4 to 7 p.m. every Friday, with your choice of fish or shrimp, potato, coleslaw, roll, and drink. The fish fry is open to the public, and the cost is $13 for the fish dinner or $15 for the shrimp dinner.

Saturday, Oct. 11

~ New Life Christian Fellowship warmly invites all women junior high age and up to a WOVEN (Women Of Victory Experiencing Newness) Mug and Muffin gathering at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. The free food, fun, and fellowship starts in the lower level at the church, 317 S. Ripley Blvd., Alpena. ~ The Alpena Farmers Market Apple Pie Contest will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11. Entries must be submitted by 10 a.m. at the Warming Shelter at Mich-e-ke-wis Park, 1302 S. State Ave., Alpena. ~ The 2nd Annual Fall Bazaar and Family Fun Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Alpena County Fairgrounds, 625 S. 11th Ave., Alpena. Vendors will be inside the Merchants Building, and there will be lotto board raffles, baked goods, plants and other items for sale at the Feeding Kids Ministry booth. Outside there will be old-fashioned midway games.

~ A free Learn to Curl event for ages 18 and older will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Northern Lights Arena. Wear warm, comfortable clothes you can move easily in, and carry in clean-soled tennis shoes. This program will feature a brief introduction to curling and safety tips before getting on the ice, basic curling techniques taught by USCA certified instructors. ~ Apple Pumpkin Fun Day, full of free fall fun for children and families, will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Alpena Antique Tractor and Steam Engine Club, 6850 French Road, Alpena.

~ The Presque Isle Township Parks and Recreation Committee is hosting its Autumn Lights Festival and Chili Cook-Off from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, with wagon rides, crafts, games, a petting zoo, donuts, cider and of course, chili. This event will take place at the New Presque Isle Lighthouse Park and Garrity Hall. This event is free, but donations are appreciated. If you would like to enter the cook-off, bring your chili in a slow cooker to Garrity Hall by 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.

~ The fourth annual Old Presque Isle Lighthouse Pumpkin Stroll begins at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Presque Isle Harbor, and continues to approximately 9 p.m. A quarter-mile path through the woods to the Old Presque Isle Lighthouse will be lined with hundreds of jack-o-lanterns lining the trail to the lighthouse, which has the reputation of being haunted.

Sunday, Oct. 12

~ Euchre Sundays are from noon to 3 p.m. each week at Bolton Ridge Bar & Grill, 9101 Bolton Road. Doors open at noon, and cards hit the tables at 12:30 p.m. sharp. If the Lions are playing, the game will be on the big screens during card play.

~ If a problem drinker is affecting your life, Al-Anon can help. Confidential and anonymous meetings are held from 2 to 3 p.m. every Sunday at St. Raphael Church in Mikado.

~ PIF Cider will host a pumpkin carving and painting extravaganza from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, with pumpkins, paints, brushes and carving tools ready, and PIF will handle the cleanup. All you need to bring is your little (or not-so-little) pumpkin artist. Paint, carve, and sip on hot mulled cider (pumpkin spice optional, alcohol optional) or something off PIF’s new Seasonal Fall Cocktail and Mocktail menus. Tickets are $15, which includes your pumpkin masterpiece to take home (drinks sold separately). Monday, Oct. 13

~ Sewing Club will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays at the Alpena County Library. No sewing experience? No problem! This club is open to all skill levels — newbie to expert, ages 10 and up. Bring your sewing machine, supplies (scissors, straight pins), and project to work on. Space and guidance will be provided. ~ A GriefShare program for those who have lost a loved one will be held at 5 p.m. on Mondays at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alpena. The program will be facilitated by Brent Finzel. If you have questions, call Carol at 989-354-3758. This 13-week program began on Sept. 15.
