Sanctuary lecture today in Alpena
Luis Miguel Acevedo-Soto will give a free lecture at noon on Wednesday at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center, 500 W. Fletcher St., Alpena. Acevedo-Soto is the Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship intern at Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. He is a college student from Puerto Rico who has spent the last two months experiencing work and life in the sanctuary. He will share about his time here, what he has learned, contributed to, and what memories he will be taking with him.
MDHHS Eat Safe Fish program today at library
Join Maddy from Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Environmental Health Bureau for Eat Safe Fish and Environscape Watershed, an interactive learning experience for youth in third through fifth grade, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Alpena County Library. ALL Moveable Feast Thursday
ALL will hold its July Moveable Feast from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at Pompeyos Mexican Grill, 1120 S. State Ave., Alpena. City Band Children’s Concert Thursday
The Alpena City Band will host the Children’s Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Alpena Bandshell at Bay View Park. The band will play every Thursday through Aug. 7, which will be the Polka Concert. Bring a lawn chair for an hour of relaxing band music.
Used book sale Friday at hospital
MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena will hold a used book sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, hosted by MyMichigan Volunteers, in the hospital lobby. The hospital is accepting gently used books (no textbooks).
Grand Lake Garage Sale Days Friday, Saturday
Grand Lake Garage Sale Days will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with over 30 families participating. Maps will be available after 5 p.m. on Thursday at the Grand Lake branch of Presque Isle District Library, Sand Bay Trading, The Portage Store, Presque Isle Harbor Clubhouse and at grandlakemi.org.
Christmas in July at the Homestead
Homestead Artisan Market and Gallery, 8015 E. Grand Lake Road, Presque Isle, will be having “Christmas in July” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, in conjunction with Grand Lake Garage Sale Days. Stop, shop and support the Homestead’s 29 local artists and artisans. There will be Christmas cookies, music and Christmas items.
Grace Episcopal monthly dinner Friday
Grace Episcopal Church on Long Rapids Road in Lachine will host their monthly dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, with grilled hot dogs and sandwiches, lots of cool salads, homemade pies and desserts. The cost is by donation. This month’s donations will go to Partners in Prevention.
Miss Nautical Coast pageant Friday
The Miss Nautical Coast pageant will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Rogers Theater, 257 N. Third St., Rogers City.
Great Lakes Now program at NOAA
On Saturday and Sunday, catch “Rescuing Freighters and Busting Swamps,” the latest episode of Great Lakes Now from Detroit PBS, playing in the theater at the NOAA Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center in Alpena. The episode will focus on the freighter Michipicoten, that recently took on water in Lake Superior, and a lawsuit over farming on wetlands. This is a free event open to all. The episode will play in the theater all weekend while the center is open, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Puzzle Competition Saturday at ACL
Alpena County Library will host an Adult Puzzle Competition from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Saturday. Get together with friends and be the first three teams to put together the puzzle and win a prize. Teams need to be two to four players and made before the event. The library will not assign teams. Teens/tweens are allowed in groups but someone in the group needs to be 18 or older. No registration necessary but there is a group limit for this event.
