ALPENA — Fourth of July in Alpena is always packed with loads of activities and events, and a host of residents and visitors enjoyed a beautiful day of celebration on Friday.

Festivities kicked off on Thursday night with Persuasion Band performing a free concert at the Alpena Bandshell as crowds packed into the open areas of Bay View Park to get in position to enjoy the fireworks show after the concert, which was sponsored by True North Radio Network.

Fireworks were set off from several boats over Thunder Bay.

Then, on Friday, activities began with the Dork Brothers Fourth of July 5K, followed by the HPC Credit Union Fourth of July parade, then the Optimist Club Rubber Duckie Race. The Alpena News Sandcastle Contest drew many participants and observers at Starlite Beach from 8 a.m. until the awards presentation at 4 p.m. The Alpena City Band performed a Patriotic Concert at 7:30 p.m. at the Alpena Bandshell at Bay View Park.
