ALPENA — The Alpha Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society of women educators, met on May 15 at the 19th Hole Restaurant to celebrate its 68th birthday and award grants to individuals entering the teaching profession.
After dinner, Lori Vought, member of the Grant-in-Aide Committee, introduced Claire Villarreal and her parents. Claire received a $1,000 grant to continue her education. The other recipients were unable to attend. Cassie Marchinski was also awarded $1,000 and Val Bower, a teacher at All Saints Parochial School, received $100.
Midge Connon informed the members of the current status of the Myrna Kelley Scholarship Fund. The original gift of $10,000 is now valued at $17,873, due to donations from members and a $1,000 annual contribution from the organization. Once the fund totals $20,000, it will fund itself.
Betty Masters recruited members to welcome visitors to Green School during the Log Cabin Days at the Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan on Saturday, June 28. Green School is a project that the Alpha Xi Chapter has been involved with for many years.
Carol Kindt and Midge Connon attended the State Convention at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort the first weekend of May. They gave a report to the members about the workshops they attended and the activities that were available. Connon received an award recognizing her 50 years as a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.
