League of Michigan Bicyclists in Alpena through Sunday
Join the League of Michigan Bicyclists for a SUNRISE Adventure in Alpena, Sanctuary of the Great Lakes, today through Sunday, starting from 311 N. 2nd Ave. downtown. Cycle your choice of routes down forested roads and past historic lighthouses. Enjoy a glass-bottom boat cruise to see some of the 200 shipwrecks lying just off the Lake Huron coast, learn their history at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center, kayak the beautiful inland waters of Thunder Bay River, and leave your worries behind as you relax in Alpena’s peaceful downtown. ALL hosting Bifocal Brass today at ACC
ALL will host Bifocal Brass from 1 to 2 p.m. on today at the Alpena Community College Granum Theatre. Bifocal Brass is a brass sextet, somewhat modeled after the Canadian Brass. They play a variety of music styles, including classical, show tunes, jazz, marches, and other traditional band music. Bifocal Brass members include: Mark Kroll — 1st Trumpet: Retired band director from Ohio; Ron Cady — 2nd Trumpet: Retired teacher from Cheboygan; Ben Westrope — French Horn: Engineer with Timm Construction; Jon Hopkins — Trombone: Retired teacher and band director from Alpena; Larry McLennan — Baritone: Retired from Social Security Administration; and Dennis Artley — Tuba: Retired from Internal Revenue Service.
Alpena City Band concert tonight
The Alpena City Band opens its summer concert season at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Alpena Bandshell at Bay View Park. The band will play every Thursday through Aug. 7, excluding the Patriotic Concert, which will be on Friday, the 4th of July. Other themed concerts will be Looking Back on June 19, Children’s Concert on July 24, and the Polka Concert on Aug. 7. Bring a lawn chair for an hour of relaxing band music. The Alpena City Band rehearses every Tuesday at ACC’s Granum Theatre. All interested musicians are welcome to attend. The band is among Alpena’s longer-established civic organizations. It is a nonprofit organization and relies upon community support for its continuing existence. Donations can be made to Alpena City Band, P.O. Box 14, Alpena, MI 49707.
Leer rummage sale Saturday
Leer Lutheran Church will hold an outdoor rummage and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the church pavilion, 10430 South Leer Road in Posen. All proceeds go to local charities. For more information, call 989-379-3988.
Rummage sale at Immanuel Saturday
A rummage sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday in the gym at Immanuel Lutheran School, 355 Wilson St., Alpena.
Thunder Bay Martial Arts Karate Tournament Saturday
Thunder Bay Martial Arts will host a karate tournament on Saturday at the APlex. Register online at mataction.com/thunderbay. Late registration will start at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, and the tournament starts at noon.
Summer Concert Series starts Saturday at Bay View
True North Radio Network’s Summer Concert Series starts Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Alpena Bandshell at Bay View Park. All concerts run from 6 to 9 p.m. except the July 3 concert will be from 7 to 10 p.m. The lineup includes: June 14: High Speed – Modern Dance; June 28: Vinyl Underground – Pop-Rock/Dance; July 3: Persuasion Band – Pop/Dance; July 12: Whiskey 6 – Classic Rock; August 9: Risque Band – Pop/Dance; Aug. 16: Jedi Mind Trip – Classic Rock; Aug. 23: Strings Attached – Modern Rock.
