Senior Center offering dementia programs

ALPENA — Alpena Senior Citizens Center is offering support for those with dementia and their caregivers, through a variety of programs and resources.

“Support groups for dementia caregivers or individuals with dementia are precious,” the latest senior center newsletter states. “They offer a safe space for people to share their experiences, emotions, and coping strategies with others who understand first-hand what they’re going through. These groups provide practical advice, emotional support, and a sense of community.”

On the first and third Thursday of the month, from 4 to 5 p.m., the senior center offers “You Are Not Alone” dementia support group.

The senior center also offers “Spark A Connection Memory Cafe” at 1 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month. This is an opportunity for those with dementia and caregivers to connect while creating an art project.

“It’s more of a supportive gathering designed for the individuals that are living with the dementia, as well as their caregivers,” Senior Citizens Center Director Annie Hepburn said of “Spark A Connection.” “So, it’s more for socialization. It’s a welcoming environment.”

The REACH program is also offered. REACH stands for Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer’s Caregiver Health in the Community. This is an evidence-based program designed to support caregivers of those with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.

If you have questions about any of these programs, call Program Director B.J. Sander or Hepburn at 989-356-3585.
