Lions White Cane sale starts today

ALPENA — The Alpena Lions Club will be holding its annual White Cane fundraiser this week in Alpena.

“This is our largest fundraiser of the year,” said Alpena Lions Club President Bernie Lamp.

Donations will be accepted at Fitzpatrick Hardware and Perch’s IGA today and Friday from noon to 6 p.m. or on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can also donate from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Friday at the Alpena Post Office.

Lamp said the funds raised will go toward local, statewide and international programs, including but not limited to youth programs, providing eyeglasses and hearing aids, eye exams, leader dogs for the blind, sending blind youth to Bear Lake Camp, and the Eversight program, which provides cornea transplants.

This is the Alpena Lions Club’s 95th year, and they will be celebrating with a dinner later this month.

They recently donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Alpena for its summer food program, Lamp said.

The Alpena Lions Club also recently helped with the installation of a handicap ramp with Habitat for Humanity Northeast Michigan, he added.

The main causes the Lions Club focuses on are sight, hearing, diabetes, pediatric cancer and youth.
