The Northern Michigan Brass Band (NMiBB) will present a concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Alpena.

This 28-piece, British-style brass band will perform an eclectic mix of traditional brass band classics, marches, transcriptions, featured solos, contest pieces, pop and jazz.

According to Conductor Ralph Schweigert, “When planning a program, NMiBB tries to remember that not everyone listens to music in the same way. Some people listen with their heads, others with their hearts, and still others with their feet. NMiBB includes music that will appeal to each of these listening styles on every concert.”

The concert will open with “Fanfare and Festival Overture On A Disney Theme,” by Brad Kelley, arranged expressly for NMiBB by the composer from his original version for orchestra. That piece will be followed by “A Little Prayer,” a beautiful meditation by Evelyn Glennie; “Viking Age,” a dramatic tone-poem in four sections by French composer Thierry Deleruyelle; two traditional marches, “The Melody Shop,” by Karl King and “Graf Zeppelin,” by Carl Teike; “Rejoice And Be Glad,” by Joseph Turrin; and toe-tapping arrangements of “Chanson d’Amour,” and “Chicago!”

The featured soloist will be cornetist Les Jackson in a performance of Hermann Bellstedt’s virtuoso set of variations on the traditional Italian folk song, “Napoli.” Jackson has degrees from Western Michigan University and Eastern Michigan University where he studied trumpet with Leonard Maretta (WMU) and Carter Eggers (EMU). He joined the NMiBB solo cornet section in the fall of 2018.

General admission for this concert is $10 for adults with all students admitted free. Tickets are available online at www.MynorthTickets.com and at the door.
