NORML meeting on Monday

A Town Hall style open meeting to discuss the benefits associated with “opting in” regarding the allowance of recreational marijuana will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, at Alcona Township Hall in Black River, sponsored by NE Michigan NORML (National Organization to Reform Marijuana Laws).

City and township officials and the public are invited. Speakers will be Rick Thompson from the Michigan Cannabis Industry Association, Tom Reif, a municipal consultant, and Jamie Lowell, a contributor to and associate author of the Michigan Recreational Marijuana law.

History Hour at GLLMM Tues.

Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum hosts History Hour with Jeff Thomas at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The professional history educator and volunteer at GLLMM will be sharing his knowledge and love of history and boats with slides and stories based on local history and shipwrecks.

The museum is at 367 N. Third St. in Rogers City. Admision is $5 per person. This event will be held on the first Tuesday of each month during the winter.

Longbeards meeting Tuesday

The Alpena Longbeards monthly meeting will be at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the Moose Lodge. At the meeting, 2020 raffle tickets will be available. If you have any questions, call Edith at 989-354-4964.

Class of ’53 meets Wednesday

The AHS Class of 1953 will meet for its monthly luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the 19th Hole. Please contact other classmate friends or bring a friend if you wish. For more information, call 989-356-0606.

Open mic night Wed. in Hillman

The Hillman Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring Open Mic Night from 6 to 8:30 p.m. each Wednesday (excluding holidays) at Patchwood Plaza, 14797 State Street South in Hillman. Admission is free. Musicians are asked to sign up by 5:45 p.m. The band, Into The North/Chester’s Habit will host this event. Concessions will be available. A large dance floor will be open for dancing at this family-friendly event.

Tiny Tots at library Thursday

Tiny Tots Story Time is from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, for parents/caregivers and their children birth through age 2-1/2, at Alpena County Library. Listen to stories, engage in a combination of structured and free play, and interact with other children. No registration is necessary.

Upcoming Tiny Tots Story Times are Feb. 13 and 27. Preschool Play Date, for children ages 2-1/2 to 5 with adult, will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, and Feb. 4 and 18.

Newcomers meeting Thursday

The Newcomers Lunch Group will meet at noon Thursday at Big Boy Restaurant on Ripley Boulevard in Alpena. Call Terry at 989-340-0676 if you plan to attend.

Healthy Connections Thursday

Healthy Connections presentation, food samples and cooking demonstration will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, at Alpena Seventh-day Adventist Church, 4029 U.S.-23 South.

The presentation is called My Struggle, and… “Exercise as Preventative Medicine,” presented by Bob Benson, RPT, MS in PE and MDiv, certified personal trainer who is certified in weight management. Golden Agers to meet Friday

The Golden Agers enjoyed their Christmas party at the 19th Hole. Vice President Bea Rohde gave the table prayer. Numbers were given and everyone received beautiful gifts. The meeting was closed with the Lord’s Prayer. The next meeting will be at noon on Friday at the Salvation Army Church. Card bingo will be played, so bring a gift from home.

Texas Hold ‘Em tourney Jan. 11

A Texas Hold ‘Em Poker tournament fundraiser for the Plaza Pool will be held Saturday, Jan. 11, at the APlex, 701 Woodward Ave. in Alpena, hosted by the Friends of Plaza Pool. A mini tournament starts at 1 p.m. Registration for the main tournament is prior to 3:30 p.m., and the tournament starts at 4 p.m. Cost is $40 per player. NE Michigan Death Cafe Jan. 14

Death Cafe is a monthly discussion group hosted by registered facilitator Brian Schorn. Death Cafe is an international organization that encourages people to gather, eat cake, drink tea or coffee, and discuss death in a respectful, nonjudgmental space. The objective is “to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives.” This month’s Northeast Michigan Death Cafe will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 14 at Studio Rubedo, 213 W. Chisholm St., Alpena. Donations are greatly appreciated.
