Write a novel in Nov. for NaNoWriMo

ALPENA — Every book, television show, and movie starts with an idea. The big problem for many is putting in the time, effort, and dedication to develop that idea into a finished product, but the Alpena Writers’ Group wants to help motivate prospective authors.

Every year, November has been set aside as National Novel Writing Month (or NaNoWriMo for short) and the writer’s group will be holding several events to coincide with this year’s 30-day challenge to write a 50,000-word novel.

The group had an initial planning meeting Tuesday, but there is still time to sign up and join this novel-writing challenge that starts on Nov. 1.

Then, during the month of November there will be bi-weekly, scheduled “write-ins” where authors can gather at the library with other like-minded individuals to support each other in their creative endeavors. Authors who continue to meet their 1,667-a-day word count goals will be able to track their progress on the NaNoWriMo website, earn various rewards, and at the end of the month, have completed a first draft of their novel.

In the following months, the Alpena Writers’ Group will continue to support the authors by covering topics on editing, polishing, and eventually seeking avenues for publication at their meetings held on the second Tuesday of each month.

So, if you have ever set an idea for a book onto the back-burner and would like to turn that dream into a reality, this could be the year for you to begin that journey. For more information, contact the Alpena Writers’ Group at their website, on Facebook (search for Alpena Writers’ Group), or join them at their upcoming NaNoWriMo write-ins:

From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, and Tuesdays, Nov. 5, 12, and 19; and from 1 to 3 p.m. Sundays Nov. 10, 17 and 24.
