‘Haunted’ Presque Isle Lighthouse talk Sat.

The Old (1840) Lighthouse of Presque Isle has long been considered haunted. Michigan storyteller, historian and author Dianna Stampfler will present a lively and upbeat historical program at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the North Bay Beach House, 5602 E. Grand Lake Rd. (just south of the PI Harbor Marina). She will draw stories from her best-selling book, “Michigan’s Haunted Lighthouses,” focusing on the Old Presque Isle Light. Hosted by the Presque Isle Township Museum Society, the program is free and open to the public. Donations to support the Presque Isle Township Museum Society or Restoration Fund are appreciated.

Following her talk, Stampfler will be signing copies of her book, which was released in March from The History Press/Arcadia Publishing. Books will be available for $20 plus tax. Around 7:30 p.m., attendees will be invited to walk the grounds of the Old Presque Isle Lighthouse, and are encouraged to bring a flashlight and wear sturdy shoes.

“I have been researching, writing and presenting programs about Michigan’s lighthouses and their keepers for more than 20 years,” says Stampfler, who launched her company Promote Michigan in 2004 after serving for seven years as the marketing and media director with the West Michigan Tourist Association. “I continue to be amazed at how many people truly love to hear about our historic (and often haunted) lighthouses and the role they played in so many of Michigan’s early industries like mining, lumbering, fishing, agriculture and manufacturing.”

A dozen other lights around Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, and Lake Superior are included in the book. During her talk, Stampfler will share stories about the keepers, their families and their spirits, who remain at these historic beacons. Full of history and lore, the program is suitable for all ages.
