Lions hear from hospital president

Chuck Sherwin, president of MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena, was the speaker at the May 7 meeting of the Alpena Lions Club.

The center, with its about 800 employees, is perhaps the largest employer in this area. Program chair for the meeting was Jan Kane.

Describing the operation of the hospital, Sherwin noted the many awards and achievements it has received in recent years. He also noted many of the recent improvements — the new equipment installed, areas of quality and safety that have been improved, long-term debt that has been paid off, and improvements to the emergency department. Improvements to the buildings, both underway and planned for the future, were described and illustrated. He also said our Alpena hospital is the second-largest in the MidMichigan system.

Sherwin reported that most of his time is spent recruiting physicians and hospital employees, improving hospital and patient finance plans, and planning the future of the hospital.

President Mike Centala thanked the club for its leadership and participation in the recent Lions District 11E2 Convention, which was held at the Ramada Inn. PDG Dave Zeller received special thanks for his organizing and for his leadership of the convention.
