Hurons aiming to win third straight regional title tonight

The Rogers City volleyball team passed a tough test on Tuesday, defeating Leland in a thrilling five-set regional semifinal.

Now the Hurons want to keep their postseason run going.

The Hurons will attempt to win their third straight regional title tonight against Bellaire in a Class D regional final in Bellaire.

Game time is slated for 7 p.m.

A win tonight would also send the Hurons to their third straight quarterfinal. Rogers City lost in the quarterfinals in 2015, but won last season on the way to an appearance in the semifinals.

The winner will face either Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart or Muskegon Catholic Central in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday.

Despite being ranked in the top 10 for a good part of the season, the Hurons have been tested repeatedly in the playoffs. The Hurons got a strong push from Hillman and another from Onaway last week in districts before going wire to wire with the second-ranked Comets on Tuesday.

Rogers City won the first and third sets and took an early lead in the fifth set. Despite several rallies by the Comets, the Hurons were able to hang on for the win.

Taylor Fleming led Rogers City with 25 kills, 24 digs, seven aces and two blocks. Kayla Rabeau added 20 kills and 18 digs and Kristin Brege had 37 assists.

Led by a strong performance from Rachel Witowski, Bellaire swept Hale on Tuesday.

After some strong defensive plays, Witowski served three aces to help the Eagles squash a Hale comeback attempt to force a fourth set.

Lexi Niepoth led Bellaire with 10 kills and Malorie Meeker had nine.
