Muszynski reaches milestone as Tigers win

RUDYARD–A balanced effort kept the Hillman boys basketball team undefeated on Tuesday.

Brandon Banks scored 18 points, Gunnar Libby had 14 and Andrew Funk chipped in with 12 as the Tigers held off a late charge from Rudyard to defeat the Bulldogs 64-46.

The win was also the 200th career victory for Hillman coach Eric Muszynski.

“Tonight we demonstrated a well-balanced attack with three guys in double figures,” Muszynski said. “Defensively, we did an outstanding job. We had 20 steals on the night and they had 26 turnovers.”

Hillman (3-0) broke open a close game late in the first quarter as Funk hit a pair of three-pointers and Kory Henigan hit a free throw to take an 8-5 game to 15-5 and put Hillman firmly in the lead.

Hillman led 33-17 at halftime and 49-25 after three quarters. Rudyard outscored Hillman 21-15 in the fourth quarter and cut the lead to 12 late in the game, but couldn’t draw any closer.

Dylan Mills led Rudyard with 23 points.

Banks had seven assists and six steals to go with his 18 points.

“He had a heck of a game,” Muszynski said. “He did a nice job leading the way for us.”

Rogers City 49,

Inland Lakes 41

INDIAN RIVER — The Rogers City boys basketball team earned a big road victory on Tuesday, defeating Indian River Inland Lakes by a score of 49-41.

“It was a hard fought game. We had too many turnovers and missed opportunities, but we played tough defensively and made the plays when we had to,” Rogers City coach Matt Ponik said.

The Hurons led most of the way and carried an eight point lead into halftime. Inland Lakes battled back and cut the deficit to four heading into the fourth quarter, but Rogers City made some key baskets down the stretch to come away with the victory.

Brendan Koss scored a team high 15 points to lead Rogers City. Andrew Radke added 10 points in the winning effort.

Onaway competes at Chippewa Hills tourney

REMUS–The Onaway wrestling team had three grapplers place during a tournament at Chippewa Hills last weekend.

Troy Klein (160) took fourth place after losing to Beaverton’s Jack Owens by fall in two minutes. Klein was his first two matches 12-5 and 5-1 respectively.

Coty Ionetz (152) won the fifth place match, winning by technical fall 17-2 over Berrien Springs’ Brayden Parker. Ionetz pinned his first opponent in 46 seconds and lost his second match by pin in 2:46. Ionetz rebounded to win by technical fall in his third match, 23-6 before beating Parker.

Brittney Wolgast (112) lost the seventh place match against Howard Tri City’s Nathen Smits, 6-2. Wolgast lost her first match in 47 seconds against Clinton’s Noah Comar, who was last year’s state runner-up. In her second match, Wolgast was pinned in 4:47.

“Overall the kids wrestled well.  Brittney had two good battles in the wrestleback matches and although she got pinned in one of them she did make a great match out of it.  In her final bout she was in the process of putting her opponent on his back when time expired,” Onaway coach Mark Grant said.

“Coty had a good day capped off with two tech falls, something he has never done before.  He continues to wrestle hard and is improving continuously.  It was good to see him have that success for several reasons and hard work will continue to bring those types of results.”

“Troy found himself on the mat with some pretty big kids this weekend.  All three wrestlers were up a weight higher than they could be but it was most obvious for Troy.  He battled well in each match but was giving up too much size and strength.  He is starting to get back into the zone from last season and if we can keep the pressure on him in the practice room he will continue to grow into his full potential.”
