SkyWest proposes return of Minneapolis flight in Alpena

ALPENA — SkyWest Airlines is the only airline company to submit a bid for air service at Alpena County Regional Airport. The new two-year deal, if approved by the Department of Transportation, would continue round-trip flights to Detroit and add five round-trip flights to Minneapolis.

According to Airport Manager Steve Smigelski the return of the flights to Minneapolis is huge for the airport. He said it will allow customers a larger selection of connecting flights, especially to destinations out west. If approved it would be SkyWest’s third two-year contract with Alpena County and Smigelski said the service has been reliable, safe and SkyWest has been willing to tweak things to help make service in Alpena better.

“They have been a fantastic partner and have done a lot to help the airport,” Smigelski said. “It changed its flight schedule and pricing to help us and have just been great.”

SkyWest is seeking nearly $3.2 million in essential air service subsidy from the federal government for operation in Alpena. Airport officials are still waiting for departure and arrival times for the new proposal, which Smigelski said he expects before tomorrow.
