Scout troops experiment for Science Day

By Jordan Spence 2 min read

ALPENA -- Girl and Boy Scout troops from as far as Boyne City will be at Alpena Community College for a Science Day.

"This year's going to be one of our bigger years. We've got people coming from all over from northern Michigan," Troop Service Unit Director Cindy Ranshaw said.

Ranshaw volunteers for the event, and said there will be four different kinds of sciences for children to try.

"We set up in four different stations," troop leader and ACC biology instructor Deb Haupau said. "We have biology, earth science, chemistry and physics in four different rooms. Then in each room there's 20-25 hands on experiments of all age levels."

The scouts can try as many experiments as they want. There will be easier experiments provided for the younger children and harder experiments for the older scouts, Haupau said. She said she also changes the experiments so they aren't repeated year after year.

Haupau said the science day is a good way for scouts to earn their science badges.

She said this is the fifth year they've organized the day. Last year she said there were about 40-50 kids who attend. This year she is prepared for about 100.

"It's slowly spreading," she said. "The word is spreading. Based on how many calls I'm getting from other troop leaders we will have a lot of kids here."

To help organize the event troop leaders, older scouts and some of Haupau's college students will volunteer.

"It's a multi-faceted effort," she said. "I have volunteers who come by wanting to help again. I have scouts coming here every year for five years."

The event is open and free to all Boy and Girl Scout members. It takes place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday on the first floor of the ACC Natural Resource Center, 665 Johnson St.
