Melissa Burns, who directs the nonprofit Food Bank for 11 counties in Northeast Michigan, was the speaker at the Jan. 15 meeting of the Alpena Lions Club. Program chair for the meeting was Alan Gapski.
The Food Bank obtains and passes on food to people in need in the community. Their sources of food are both purchased (from low-cost sources) and donations from food producers. Much fresh produce is obtained and passed on for free. They save meat that is about to expire by freezing it.
The Food Bank also conducts programs that teach those in need how to prepare and cook food. They operate backpack programs (food for weekends), and school pantry programs. They operate a venison donation project.
The Food Bank is a part of the Feeding America organization. Burns concluded her program by outlining how the Lions could help.
Bernie Lamp Jr. announced that the Alpena Lions had collected 2,837 pairs of used eyeglasses in 2018 and passed them along to Lions International for rehabilitation and use by the needy worldwide.
