Alpena airport architecture earns mag mention, reflects regional culture
ALPENA — The community-focused architecture of the new Alpena County Regional Airport terminal got a nod in a national trade magazine last week.
Facility Executive, a publication reporting on intelligent building design, on Friday touted the terminal’s Lake Huron-inspired aesthetic and ties to Alpena’s shipping and quarrying history, including a color palette and linear patterns modeled after striations in local rock formations.
The lobby, complete with fireplace and stone- and wood-inspired shapes, was intended to convey the feel of a north woods living room, the magazine said.
Building materials mirror those used in civic buildings in Alpena, an architect with the firm RS and H, which oversaw the design process, told Facility Executive.
