ALPENA - The Alpena Wildcats defeated the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils 3-1 in Big North Conference play Tuesday night, pairing a gritty team effort with their annual Pink Out cancer awareness event.

Alpena opened with a 25-19 first-set win, dropped a close second set 19-25, then claimed a tight 30-28 third set before controlling the fourth to seal the match. The home crowd stayed loud throughout as the Wildcats pressed the Blue Devils.

"The girls played great, the gym was loud. The crowd was in full force," Kolby Andrews said. "It was just a great atmosphere and the ladies really stepped up their game."

The night doubled as Alpena's annual Pink Out event. The volleyball program and community raised nearly $2,000 for Friends Together of Alpena.

Andrews said the team had prepared for the challenge.

"We've been making adjustments in practice, and we knew what we were going to get from the Soo," he said. "The ladies executed, they hustled, and they fought hard for every ball. I am very proud of the team tonight."

Madelynn Cameron led the offense with 19 kills and four aces. Emalee Parsons added nine kills and Olivia Hitzelberger contributed eight. Lilly Rospierski anchored the defense with 24 digs, and Amelia Soltysiak recorded 15.
