Cross Country: Boys win Blue division; girls place seventh at Shepherd

SHEPHERD - Alpena's boys cross country team, running without co-captain Brendan Werth, won the Blue division Saturday at the Shepherd Bluejay Invitational.

The Wildcats scored 61 points on places of 1-2-18-19-21 to finish first among 15 teams. Bay City Western was second with 81, followed by Gaylord (88) and Midland (95).

Junior Xander Allen won the 5-kilometer race in 15 minutes, 46.2 seconds, his third straight victory and fourth of the season. Junior Logan Szumila, back from injury, was the second Wildcat in 16:38.9 and placed second overall.

The next five Alpena runners all posted personal records as the team covered for Werth, a junior sidelined by a foot injury. Senior Milo Dahleen ran 17:55.9, junior Jude Krey 17:59.0, freshman Harrison McKay 18:08.4, senior Joel Kaiser 18:50.4 and freshman Damion Moore 19:02.5.

The girls, also thinned by illness and injury, placed seventh. Freshman Hailey Schultz again led Alpena, running a personal-record 21:31.5. Senior Ava Karsten followed in 22:27.8, junior Lila Scott in 22:48.6, sophomore Abby Misiak in 23:18.0, sophomore Madison Srebnik in 24:06.1 and senior Lexi Gembel in 25:24.6. Karsten, Scott, Misiak, Srebnik, and Gembel also ran personal bests.
