Alpena volleyball battles but falls to TCW 3-1

ALPENA - The Alpena Wildcats varsity volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to the Traverse City West (TCW) Titans on Tuesday, falling 19-25, 25-19, 18-25, 22-25 in a match that stayed tight into the fourth set.
Madelynn Cameron led Alpena with 16 kills and two blocks. Greta Riopelle added seven kills and Grace Cameron six. Emily Van Horn paced the defense with 20 digs. Amelia Soltysiak had 10 digs and Amaya Brousseau seven. Emalee Parsons recorded three blocks. Lilly Rospierski served two aces.
Alpena coach Kolby Andrews said the Wildcats knew they needed their best against a Titans team with size at the net.
"The girls played well, and they played tough," Andrews said. "We know we have to bring our A game against TCW, they have some big hitters. I like the way we executed, and the girls made some big blocks in key moments."
Alpena answered a first-set loss by taking the second 25-19, then dropped the third before pushing West in a 22-25 fourth set.
"No loss is typically a good loss, but I like the way they kept fighting," Andrews said. "They can hold their heads high going into Big North Conference action."
The Wildcats next face the Gaylord Blue Devils on Thursday. Gaylord is scheduled to host Alpena.
