Alpena girls swim team notch first win over Gaylord

CARO – The Alpena High School girls' varsity swim team opened its season on Tuesday with victories over Caro, 104-70, and Gaylord, 96-74, in a double-dual meet
It is the program's first win against the Blue Devils.
Coach Liz Jacques' lineup choices created scoring chances across the card. The Wildcats answered with depth, several personal records and a first-place finish in the opening 200-meter medley relay by Elizabeth Rabbideau, Penelope Conboy, Tryst Bukowiecki and Haley Stenz. Olivia Sherwood, Gabriella Tolan, Eva Trainer and Emma Darga took third in the same event, all with personal records.
Conboy won the 200 individual medley in a personal record. Bukowiecki won the 50 freestyle in a personal record, with Stenz second and Emma Winfield third. Rabbideau was second in the 400 freestyle in a personal record; Tolan (sixth) and Darga (eighth) also set personal records in that event.
Alpena won the 200 freestyle relay with Conboy, Arabella Nunez, Stenz and Bukowiecki. A second Wildcats quartet of Ellie Quick, Winfield, Jacquelyn Frantz and Trainer placed third in a personal record. Lucy Duthler, Madelyn Farley, Jazmyne Westfall and Tolan finished fifth, also in a personal-record time.
Other top finishes included Nunez third, Frantz fourth and Farley sixth (personal record) in the 200 freestyle; Bukowiecki third, Nunez fourth and Trainer fifth in the 100 butterfly; Winfield fourth, Stenz fifth and Quick sixth in the 100 freestyle; Rabbideau second, Sherwood fourth and Duthler seventh in the 100 backstroke; and Conboy third, Frantz fourth and Trainer seventh in the 100 breaststroke.
The 400 freestyle relay closed the meet with Sherwood, Darga, Nunez and Rabbideau third. Quick, Winfield, Duthler and Frantz were fourth in a personal record. Aubree Bauer, Nandi Bancroft, Westfall and Farley placed sixth in a personal record.
"The team swam well and looked great," Coach Jennifer Johnson said.
Alpena returns to action at 5 p.m. Sept. 15 in Alma.
