ALPENA – The Alpena High School boy's cross-country team opened the 2026 season with a fourth-place finish in the large-school division at the Benzie Pete Moss Invitational on Saturday.
The Wildcats placed fourth among 15 teams. Xander Allen led Alpena with a fourth-place individual finish in 15 minutes, 36 seconds. Logan Szumila finished seventh in 15:59, and Brendan Werth took 15th in 16:35.
The girls' team did not post a team score. Freshman Hailey Schultz led the Wildcats with a time of 22:40 in her high school debut.
Alpena next competes at the Alpena Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 29, at Alpena High School.
