Cadillac sweeps Wildcats in BNC tilt

ALPENA -- The Alpena High girls volleyball team faced off against Cadillac on Wednesday. The Wildcats came up short to the Vikings in all three sets with final scores of 22-25, 14-25, and 16-25.
Alpena held its own to start the match, but Cadillac quickly began to extend its lead, going up 14-7 over the Wildcats. The momentum then switched as Alpena fought back to make it a 23-21 game. Although the Wildcats fought hard, in the end the Vikings won 25-23 to finish the first set.
"We just needed to commit a little less unforced errors. We only lost by three, we had more than three mental errors and didn't get the ball over the net sometimes when we needed to. They didn't beat us by three, we gave them more than three points that they shouldn't have had," Alpena coach Kolby Andrews said.
The second set did not go as well as Alpena would've liked. The Wildcats were only down 6-5 at the beginning of the set, but again Cadillac ran away with the momentum and finished the game with a final score of 25-14. Tiffany Tessmer had a couple of impressive blocks in the set.
"Our goal and main improvement that we have been working on and we will continue to work on has been trying to limit the free point we keep giving up. We also need to work on getting the momentum early and keeping that momentum," Andrews said.
Alpena also struggled in the third set after falling into a hole early. Cadillac jumped out to a 9-0 lead over the Wildcats and was not holding back. Alpena fought the score back to 21-15, but couldn't withstand Cadillac's ability to kill the point. The Wildcats ended up falling short of the Vikings with a final score of 25-16.
"We already matched up against Cadillac this year and took a loss, but playing them the first time was very positive to this team. We know Cadillac is a great team and that we have to be on our A-game to beat them, but we just didn't have it tonight. We came out with a lot of energy, we played hard, and I'm very proud of the girls," Andrews said.
Carrisa Musta and Mackenzie Johns finished the game for the Vikings with nine kills each, while Joslyn Seeley had 11 kills. Brooke Ellens and Seeley also had 12 digs each. Musta also had three blocks in the game.
Tessmer led Alpena with seven kills, while Sydney Hitzelberger, Maddie Linton, and Olivia Precord all had five. Lanie Morgan led the team in digs with 14. Tessmer ended with two blocks and Linton had one.
Alpena takes on Sault St. Marie on Monday.
