GRAYLING — The ACC cross country team took a huge step towards its season goals on Friday night. The Lumberjacks took advantage of the near-perfect running conditions at Kirtland College Firebird Invitational held at Hanson Hills in Grayling to continue to drop times.

Five of the seven Lumberjacks hit season bests, dropping the total team time by almost thirteen and a half minutes over last week’s race in Grand Rapids.

“What a fantastic day we had,” ACC coach Mark Jacobs said. “To say I am proud is an understatement. This is a very special group of young men and they know how to work hard.”

Adam Wolffis (Montague) again led ACC with a career-best time of 28:40. Following Wolffis was Matt Wilbert (Rogers City) who ran a 29:53, an improvement over last week by two minutes forty seconds.

Following Wilbert was Jacob Kochanski (Alpena) 31:15, Iso Simpson (Saginaw) 32:48, Corbin Thering (Freeland) 34:50, Matt Mundy (Sault Ste. Marie) 35:34, and Austin Smith (Portage) 41:53.

“These guys are a blast to coach,” Jacobs said. “I leave every practice and meet in a great mood with a huge smile on my face. Not many coaches can say that.”

Alpena next travels to Oakland Community College Friday to run at the OCC Invitational.
