Alpena takes 2 from Swan Valley

SAGINAW — The Wildcats started the season with a pair of wins, topping Saginaw Swan Valley 11-4 and 9-4 on Wednesday.

In the opener, Elysa Kelley pitched a complete game for the Wildcats, allowing seven hits, walking one and striking out three.

Alpena came through offensively late in the game, scoring five runs in the last two innings. In the fifth inning, Olivia Leland scored on an RBI double by Corine Donajkowski and Emilee Modrzejewski had an RBI single. In the sixth inning, Donajkowski cleared the bases with a grand slam.

A seven-run sixth inning propelled the Wildcats in the second game and Kyra Lucas had a two-run double during that stretch. Modrzejewski had an RBI double earlier in the game and later scored on an error. Keely Dahl and Marah Wisniewski shared pitching duties for Alpena.

The Wildcats are scheduled to host Negaunee on Saturday.

JV SOFTBALL

Wildcats split with Swan Valley

SAGINAW — The Wildcats split with Saginaw Swan Valley on Wednesday, losing 5-4 and winning 16-1.

In the opener, Lanie Morgan struck out five, walked two and allowed three hits. Shaylee Allen led Alpena’s first turn at the plate with a triple and Alpena scored three runs. Swan Valley scored once in the first, and twice in both the fourth and fifth innings.

In the second game, Alpena (1-3) won by mercy rule in three innings. Grace Ryan walked three and allowed two hits. Allen and Lexius McDonald each had two hits for Alpena.
