WOLVERINE — Patience and second half improvement paved the way to more district gold for the Posen girls basketball team.

Ella Szatkowski scored 21 points and Makayla Kamyszek added nine as Posen rebounded from an up-and-down first half to defeat Onaway 44-29 in a Division 4 district final on Friday at Wolverine High School.

The win is the 15th straight for the Vikings (15-1) and gives them a second consecutive district title. It also advances them to a regional semifinal matchup on Monday with Mackinaw City.

Game time is 7 p.m. at Pellston High School.

Onaway had control of the game early, leading 11-6 after one quarter and 19-16 at halftime, thanks to playing a slower-paced game. But Posen made adjustments and took control in the second half. Posen led 25-24 after three quarters and outscored the Cardinals 19-5 in the final eight minutes.

“It’s a good win for us. Onaway is a tough matchup for us, but we did a great job in the second half,” Posen coach Karl Momrik said. “Makayla and Ella came through with some big baskets for us.”

Kamyszek and Szatkowski scored seven points each in the fourth quarter to help the Vikings pull away down the stretch.

Breya Domke led the Cardinals with 16 points, but scored just two in the second half after Posen made some adjustments at halftime to key in on her.
