THE SCOREBOARD: Both men’s and women’s basketball teams lose to Muskegon

BOYS BASKETBALL

Oscoda 72, W-P 24

WHITTEMORE — Drew Hess scored 19 points and Owen Franklin and Michael Gepfrey added 13 and 11 respectively for the Owls (19-0), who routed the Cardinals for their second consecutive district championship on Saturday. Caleb Nagel added nine points for Oscoda and Brennon Mills had eight.

Oscoda will play Charlevoix in a Division 3 regional semifinal on Tuesday at Johannesburg-Lewiston.

WRESTLING

Alpena advances 3 to finals

FREMONT — Three Alpena High wrestlers will compete in the state finals this week after qualifying at individual regionals this past weekend. Mason Bray (160) won the consolation bracket for a third-place finish, Declan Genova (145) finished second in his bracket and Austin Bush (125) finished second in his bracket.

The three of them will compete in the Division 2 finals in Grand Rapids on Friday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Muskegon 69, Alpena 37

ALPENA — The Lumberjacks (1-10) kept things close for a half and led 26-24 at halftime, but the Jayhawks got the upper hand and pulled away with a 26-5 run in the third quarter. Mollie Girard led Alpena with 16 points and Kyley LaFleche and Jade Schultz each had eight.

Alpena hosts St. Clair on Tuesday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Muskegon 81, Alpena 72

ALPENA — The Jayhawks stayed a few steps ahead of the Lumberjacks (2-9) on Friday, building a 42-36 lead by halftime and outscoring ACC 39-36 in the second half. Kelley Stark led ACC with 20 points and Chris DeRocher had 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Alpena hosts St. Clair on Tuesday.
