GIRLS BASKETBALL

Mackinaw City 78, Posen 50

PELLSTON — Madison Smith had 23 points and Marlie Postula added 21 to lead the Comets past the Vikings (15-2) in a Division 4 regional semifinal. Posen trailed by just four after one quarter, but struggled defensively and was outscored 20-6 in the second quarter. Makayla Kamyszek paced Posen with 20 points and Ella Szatkowski had 14.

“We didn’t expect to be this good and the girls superseded anything we could have imagined,” Posen coach Karl Momrik said. “That team (Mackinaw City) is really good, but I’m proud of our girls.”

Posen had a 15-game winning streak before Monday’s loss and earned a fourth consecutive division title as well as a second straight district title during the 2021 season.

St. Ignace 80, Alcona 24

ST. IGNACE — The Saints full-court pressure got to the Tigers in a Division 3 regional semifinal on Monday. Kelsey Hansen led Alcona (12-5) with seven points and Lily Bilbey added six.

“I’m proud of the kids. They never quit tonight, but St. Ignace is a good team. They’re full-court pressure got the best of us,” Alcona coach Mark Feldhiser said. “I’m proud of my girls and the season. We had a lot of adversity and we fought through it all.”

Alcona ended its season with its first district championship since 2018 and won 10 of its last 14 games.
