MHSAA suspends fall, winter sports for 3 weeks

The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced Sunday the suspension of fall sports tournaments as well as all winter practices and competitions scheduled to start over the next three weeks.

The announcement was made in accordance with an executive order issued by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Sunday to limit the spread of COVID-19 amid a spike in cases around the state.

“We understand the need for action, and we will explore all options to complete our Fall tournaments when restrictions are lifted. We will assess everything over the next three weeks relative to Fall and Winter sports and come up with a plan that keeps us connected to our goal, for months, of having three seasons that are played to their conclusions,” MHSAA Executive Director Mark Uyl said in a statement online.

The suspension puts a hold on the state volleyball, swimming and diving and 8-Player and 11-Player football postseasons. The 8-Player season is two games from completion and the 11-Player season is down to its last three rounds of play.
