PREP ROUNDUP: Wildcats win meet in West Branch

WEST BRANCH–Both the Alpena High boys and girls cross country teams came home from Saturday’s Lower Peninsula Invitational with championship trophies.

Alpena’s girls team finished with 15 points and had four finishers in the top eight. Madi Szymanski paced the field, crossing the line in 19:23.25.

Emma Dickins was fourth (21:53.08), Grace Mitchell was fifth (22:20.80) and Hannah Tracey was eighth (22:46.89). Cailyn Burrone finished 14th (23:27.20) and Samantha Zolnierek was 18th (23:43.66).

Alpena’s boys team also won after having five runners finish in the top seven.

Hayden Allen finished second (17:44.96); Hunter Hitzelberger was third (18:04.23); Jacob Kochanski was fourth (18:06.21); Eli Allen was fifth (18:22.73) and Brendan Stepaniak was seventh (18:26.34).

Ben Poli finished 13th for the Wildcats (19:44.35) and Tom Sheridan was 19th (20:22.08).

FOOTBALL

Hale 42, Posen 20

POSEN–The Posen football team fell back to the .500 mark after losing to Hale 42-20 at home on Friday.

Chase Dubie completed for passes for Posen (2-2) for 107 yards and a 30-yard touchdown to Cole Krajniak. Dubie also had 15 carries for 51 yards and a touchdown.

Lucas Stone led Posen on the ground with 19 carries for 129 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Ben Romel had nine tackles for the Vikings, Stone had eight and an interception; Logan Timm and Dubie each had seven tackles.

Posen is scheduled to play Onaway this week.

GIRLS GOLF

Ellis closes out high school career

EAST LANSING–Alpena High senior Kennedy Ellis closed out her high school career Friday at the Division 2 state finals in East Lansing at Michigan State’s University’s Forest Akers West golf course.

Ellis shot a 101 in her final round as a Wildcat and finished tied 73rd out of the 108 girls competing while playing through a sprained ankle on a notoriously difficult course.

Ellis’ senior season consisted of nine top ten finishes. She also earned first team all-Big North Conference honors.

Ellis intends to play golf at Olivet College in the fall.
