PREP ROUNDUP: Wildcat netters swept by Titans

TRAVERSE CITY–The Alpena High volleyball team played hard, but couldn’t avoid a sweep on Wednesday, losing to Traverse City West, 18-25, 16-25, 13-25.

Allie DeRocher had six kills, two aces, and 12 digs for Alpena, Jade Gray had 12 assists and Allie Urlaub had five kills.

Alpena’s JV team won 25-19, 25-21, 22-25. Macy Schema had 22 digs and three aces for Alpena, Lindsey King had seven kills and Avery Dubey had 12 assists.

Alpena’s freshman team lost in three sets.

Onaway 3, Bellaire 0

ONAWAY–The Onaway volleyball team stayed in the hunt for the Ski Valley Conference title on Tuesday after sweeping Bellaire at home.

Onaway won 26-24, 25-21 and 25-21.

Onaway is 6-1 in conference play and can clinch at least a share of the title with a win over Mancelona.

Breya Domke had 11 kills and seven aces for Onaway; Lexi Horton had six kills and five aces; Macie Decker had four kills and two aces; Nicole Larson had five kills and an ace and Aubrey Benson had four kills.

Posen 3, Atlanta 1

POSEN–The Posen volleyball team topped Atlanta in four sets on Tuesday, during its annual Pink Out for Cancer game.

Donations from the game were given to the American Cancer Society–Alpena Relay for Life.

Posen won 26-28, 25-19, 25-11 and 25-12.

Elizabeth Romel had two aces, three digs and three kills for Posen and Mia Newhouse had a kill, a block, seven digs and an ace. Abigail Schellie had three aces and three kills, Makayla Kamyszek had seven assists, three digs and an ace and Madison Menzel had a block and four kills.

Oscoda 3, Hillman 0

HILLMAN–The Hillman volleyball team lost to Oscoda in three sets on Tuesday: 12-25, 17-25, 22-25.

Julia Taratuta had 10 aces and 10 digs for Hillman; Emalie Lis had four aces, two digs and a kill; Emma Libby had six digs, five aces, two assists and two kills and Jessie Jones had two kills, two digs and an ace.

Two Alpena runners earn

Big North Conference honors

PETOSKEY–A pair of Alpena High runners earned all-Big North Conference honors during the conference championships in Petoskey on Tuesday.

Haydyn Allen finished 13th in the boys race for second-team honors and Madi Szymanski finished eighth in the girls race for second-team honors as well.

Alpena coach Joy Bullis said the Wildcats focused on placement during Tuesday’s rainy, windy conditions. Alpena’s boys team finished fourth overall and Alpena’s girls team finished fifth.

Alpena will compete in the Northern Michigan Invitational on Saturday in West Branch.

Traverse City Central’s Drew Seabase, a former Alpena runner, won the boys race and the conference title in 16:18.22, finishing well ahead of the second place runner.

Four medal for Alcona

HALE–Four runners medaled for Alcona High during Tuesday’s Hale Invitational.

Carter Upper finished 10th in the boys race, Sara Decker and Karen Sharboneau were eighth and 10th respectively in the girls race and Cole Upper won the middle school boys race.

SOCCER

Alcona 4, Fairview 1

FAIRVIEW–Joel Steiner recorded a hat trick and the Alcona soccer team topped Fairview 4-1 on Monday in a North Star League game.

Tim Jamieson added a single tally for the Tigers and Kaden Barryhill added an assist.

Keeper Caleb Kamischke made 10 saves for Alcona.
