PREP ROUNDUP: Alpena runners advance to regionals, Alcona runners set season records

Five runners from the Alpena High Wildcats cross country boys and girls teams will advance to regional competition on Oct. 31 at the Saginaw Heritage Course.

The teams as a whole did not qualify after failing to finish in the top four in pre-regional qualifying events on Saturday .

The students moving on to regionals are Haydyn Allen, Jacob Kochanski, Hunter Hitzelberger, Madi Szymanski, and Emma Dickins.

Alcona runners set season records

The Alcona High School varsity cross country competed in pre-regionals at Indian River on Friday.

The girls were led by Sara Decker who earned a season record of 23:18.03, Karen Sharboneau posted a time of 23:57.9, and Janae Kierzek also set a season record of 31:03.2. The showing wasn’t enough to qualify for regionals.

The boy’s team was led by Carter Upper, who ran a new personal record of 19:37.9, which qualified him for regionals on Saturday at East Jordan.
