Alpena High honors Athletes of the Year

News Photo by James Andersen Recent Alpena High School graduates Eli Winter and Anna Young were formally recognized as the 2019-20 Male and Female Athlete of the Year on Friday at Wildcat Stadium. The pair was originally recognized for the honor in May during a virtual senior awards ceremony. Winter was a standout in track and field and football who will compete in track and field at the University of Michigan. In football, Winter was a two-year starter at linebacker and running back. As a senior, he earned first team all-Big North Conference honors, rushed for more than 1,000 yards, recorded more than 100 tackles and four interceptions and was named the Alpena News 11-Player Player of the Year. In track, Winter won the Division 1 state championship in the discus as a junior and finished seventh in the shot put. He also earned a Big North title in the discus, a regional championship in the shot put and a second place finish in the discus at regionals. Young starred in cross country, soccer and basketball for the Wildcats and will play soccer at Delta College. In cross country, she qualified for the state finals as a freshman and was a starter on Alpena’s girls basketball team. In soccer, Young holds career records for goals and points as well as single-season records in goals, assists and points. She earned all-state honors last season and earned first team all-Big North Conference, all-district and all-region honors twice.
