PREP ROUNDUP: Vikings clinch share of Little Dipper title

POSEN–The Posen girls basketball team wrapped up a share of the North Star League’s Little Dipper division title in dominant fashion on Tuesday, beating Atlanta 74-19.

Riley Krajniak scored 13 points and Makayla Kamyszek and Elena Kalbitzer added 13 and 11 points respectively for the Vikings (14-4, 9-1 NSL), who led 38-10 at halftime.

“It’s a great feeling and kind of unexpected with the team we have,” Posen coach Karl Momrik said. “We’ve got the youngest team we’ve ever put on the floor in Posen with four sophomores, one freshman and two eighth graders, so this is pretty special.”

Posen plays at Johannesburg-Lewiston on Thursday in a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.

Onaway 62,

Pellston 13

ONAWAY — The Onaway girls basketball team made quick work of Ski-Valley Conference foe Pellston on Tuesday, blowing out the Hornets 62-13.

Three Cardinals scored double digits in the win, led by Nicole Larson who poured in a game high 20 points. Jillian Chaskey finished with 13 points and Breya Domke scored 10 points.

“It wasn’t much of a contest tonight, but we did get a chance to work on some defense and some set plays,” Onaway coach John George said. “We also had an opportunity to get some of our shooters going tonight.”

The Cardinals will wrap up regular season play on Thursday when they travel to Rogers City.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Posen 44,

Rogers City 22

POSEN — Posen capped off a perfect regular season against its Presque Isle rivals as the Vikings defeated Rogers City for the second time this season and improved to 4-0 in games against their county rivals as Posen shut down the Hurons in a 44-22 win on Tuesday at Posen High School.

The two teams battled throughout the first three quarters, despite Posen holding a 28-18 lead after the third quarter, but the fourth quarter was the difference as the Vikings outscored the 16-4 in the final quarter to come away with a decisive home victory.

“Give credit to coach (Matt) Ponik. He and his team came out with a great game plan, but we were able to open it up at the end and our depth paid off for us,” Posen head coach Chris Keller said. “We were poise when Rogers City tried slowing the pace down and I’m proud of them for showing that poise.”

Nine of Posen’s 11 players cracked the scoring column on the night. The Vikings were led by Lucas Stone who finished with 12 points and Eyan Hincka scored eight points.

Posen improves to 13-4 overall on the year and will return to its home court on Monday when the Vikings host Atlanta.
